Mary-Sues: A Fine Line

A couple months ago I read "My Immortal" for the first time. And despite the fact that I was amazed she could even spell the name of her own story, I was introduced to a new concept: Mary Sues (Also known as Gary Stus in their male forms). A Mary Sue is often a self insertion, the "perfect girl" stereotype, the sue whom seems to get all the ladies/men, or the angst ridden teen who manages to over come their "dark past".
After learning of these literary phenomenon, I became obsessed with the history and subtypes of Mary Su
-Day 1: The Fire
Even though it was noon the skies were dark with ash. This was the second fort they'd burnt down in a week. Damn Olympians. I looked at Tuesday who had just come back from the burning quadrant 42.
"Casualties?" I asked, staring up at the grey smoke above.
"15 casualties," She said gravely. I could had sworn there had been more. I saw them burning myself. In every quadrant there were 50 soldiers. There were 200 quadrants. We'd already lost 457 soldiers to ambushes and other types of guerilla warfare.
The sky began to shed it's tears through the dark layers of agony up above. I never understood why this always happened
